Is Quality or Cost Most Important?

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Jul 11, 2019 @ 09:00 AM

A couple of years ago, I decided that I wanted to be better at baking. I invested in some supplies, bought a few recipe books and spent my spare time obsessing over baking shows and how-to articles. Today, I'm still on my quest for baking excellence, and my RMS co-workers are often subjected to whatever recipe I'm trying to perfect.

So , when one of our front office staff mentioned a craving for brownies, I thought I'd whip up a batch. My brownie recipe is tried, true, and always a crowd favorite. (Assuming I can get out of the house with a tray intact). One problem, I didn't have the same chocolate that I usually make the recipe with. But no big deal, I had something I could sub in. It wasn't up to my normal standards, but I thought it couldn't matter that much. It was getting melted down and mixed with half a dozen other ingredients. Plus if it worked, I'd save some money every time I made that recipe.

The results? Complete disaster.

Happy Fourth of July from RMS

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Jul 04, 2019 @ 09:01 AM

When I was a kid, the moment the bell rang on the last day of school, summer officially started. It didn't matter if the skies were cloudy and gray for another month. Or that the time off school meant a ton of chores. That cutoff meant that summer fun could truly begin.

As an adult it seems harder to make that transition from the frigid winter and slightly gloomy spring. Throughout June I find myself missing that feeling of glee that used to accompany the temporary freedom from daily routine.

So for me, the Fourth of July has become sort of a sign post that summer has really begun. And that even though the alarm still rings every morning, I can still recapture a bit of that summer time joy by spending a day of celebration with my family and friends.

One thing that helps me do this is getting all of my ducks in a row before I leave the office for the day. Even 1 day can still create a backlog of to-do's if you haven't prepared properly. Here's a few point-of-sale to do's to make sure you're ready to have a stress free time away.

Why Independence Day is an Important Holiday for Retail Pharmacy

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Jun 27, 2019 @ 11:48 AM

When you think of holiday spending, Independence Day may not be number one on your list. It's not a time when we exchange gifts or plan elaborate meals. But as it turns out, the 4th of July weekend posts some pretty big retail sales every year.

Maybe it's the summer season. The call of outdoor play and that barbecue that's been neglected all year. Or maybe it's the idea of celebrating something that's bigger than any one person. Whatever the reason, July 4th puts Americans in the mood to celebrate, and that celebration comes with some increased spending.

Have you ever played a game without fully understanding the rules? Frustrating right? You get the concept and the end goal but the first time or two you play there's confusion, arguing with team mates and opponents alike, and just a general feeling of exasperation.

Whether we're playing a board game or trying to understand the concept of Frisbee golf for the first time, there's only one thing that gets you through those first awkward attempts. Understanding how the game is supposed to be played.

Slow and steady wins the race, or so the saying goes. It's applicable in so many different ways. Most of them speaking to the power of perseverance.

Customer Loyalty in Your Pharmacy

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Jun 06, 2019 @ 11:41 AM

A good customer loyalty program can make a world of difference in your pharmacy. But in many pharmacies, customer loyalty is thought of either as unnecessary, or representing too much effort and cost to make a difference. But is that really true?

In a new article, published in this month's Computer Talk, RMS President & CEO Brad Jones explores the reasons why pharmacies need a customer loyalty program and provides some helpful tips to get you started.

It's Trade Show Season! Are You Ready to Make the Most of This Year's Conferences?

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, May 30, 2019 @ 04:19 PM

Trade Show Season has arrived and we're gearing up to attend some of our favorite industry events in the coming months. (And looking forward to attending our first Connect conference with PioneerRx this weekend!)

We're excited every year to attend conferences like Connect, Amerisource Bergen Thoughtspot, and Cardinal RBC. We love seeing our customers, putting faces to names, and introducing new friends to our team and suite of point-of-sale products.

While every conference is unique, including different themes, new takeaways and lots of new industry contacts, they always have one thing in common. They are over in the blink of an eye. Packed with CE courses, user group meetings, dinners and entertainment, it's hard to find time to sleep, let alone make enough time to see everything on the trade show floor.

Here are our favorite tips to help you make the most of whatever shows you plan on attending this year.

Shouldn't This be Easier? Identifying Ineffective Pharmacy Workflows

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, May 23, 2019 @ 11:31 AM

For a long time, I disdained the pressure cooker hype. To me, it seemed like one extra, and very large, piece of equipment to take up space in my kitchen. But when my trusty slow cooker bit the dust I decided to buy one of those all in one do everything instant pots. I was still pretty sure I’d never use the pressure cooker function. I’d never cooked that way and didn’t see a reason to start.

But eventually, a lack of planning and absence of time had me giving something new a try. And as a result, discovering I’d been wasting a lot of time and energy because I hadn’t recognized the inefficiency in the way I was doing certain things.

My point here is that doing something the long way doesn’t mean it’s better. Seems obvious, but sometimes we get so mired down in the way we do things that we don’t stop to ask ourselves an important question. Shouldn’t this be easier?

If you’re looking at some of the workflows in your pharmacy, and you start to ask yourself this question, you’re likely going to find yourself saying “yes” at least a few times. And maybe lot more. But at the same time, you may wonder whether it’s worth it to invest the time, effort or money into changing workflows around. Here are some helpful qualifications to get you on the right track.

What Does "Strategy" Actually Mean Anyway?

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, May 16, 2019 @ 10:53 AM

If you dive down the rabbit hole of trying to better your business in any meaningful way, you're going to run into the idea of "strategy". It's become so prevalent it almost seems like a buzzword. And it's easy to start to think it might not really apply. After all, you're not playing a board game or planning a hostile takeover. You're running a pharmacy. Do you really need to think about strategy?

At the most basic level, a strategy is not a game of chess. It's not you pitted against anyone else either. It's a plan that you use to achieve a goal.

But if it's that simple, and that sensible, why doesn't everyone use a more strategic approach to growth and profitability in their pharmacy? Well, like most things the big picture is just that. Way too big to tackle in one piece. Breaking it up into smaller pieces makes everything much more manageable. Here's how to do it.
