In 2012, a study showed that 42% of people with mobile phones reached for them when bored.  In 2014, another study revealed that the average smart phone user picks up their phone as many as 1500 times per week. If you look around your environment today, you’re guaranteed to see these statistics in action.  While riding the bus or train, waiting in line at the coffee shop, or even in your independent pharmacy.

When our day’s activities leave us with idle hands, we occupy them with our cell phones.  We check email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.  Our mobile device attachment starts first thing in the morning (7:31am on average) and continues throughout the day.

There’s no avoiding the prevalence of mobile usage, and it will only become more common as time goes on.  So this week, here’s my question to you…

When your customers reach for their cell phones in a moment of boredom, will they find anything from you?  Will you have posted in one or more social media platforms?  Or sent out an email newsletter?

If your answer is no, it’s time to think about the impact that lack of presence is going to have on your business. You can bet your competition has probably already asked themselves the same question and has determined the importance of maintaining some sort of contact with their customers between visits to the store. Can you afford to be left out?
