Karen Deckard

In 2008 I was working in a quarter cubicle in the cancellation department of an insurance company. It was definitely one of those jobs that helped me figure out what I didn’t want to do with the rest of my life. I jumped at the opportunity to come to RMS to work as a sales assistant and help customers through the process of becoming certified to accept FSA cards.

 

All these years later, I’m happy that I made the leap. Sales evolved into project management which eventually became customer service management. From there the Customer Success department was born, with the goal of making sure our customers get everything they need from their RMS partnership.  While all of this was happening, I was also writing our weekly blog, and dipping my toes into the marketing side of RMS. And while I had imagined myself working as a Customer Success Manager for years (and years and years) to come, I eventually accepted a full time marketing role in 2020. 

 

At home, I am mom to two amazing kiddos, Owen and Harrison. They are my twin masters of chaos. Responsible for the permanent impressions of Lego that are embedded into my feet and the fact that I have the songs from Frozen (1 and 2) stuck in my head. All the time. I also blame them for the fact that I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen my dining room table as it seems constantly buried in whatever art projects they are working on. 

 

They likely get their DIY tendencies and love of creating something from me. I love to sew and quilt. I watch too many baking shows and have so much fun perfecting recipes and new techniques. A kitchen that always smells like fresh baked bread and cookies is my happy place. 

 

My family also includes 3 dogs, (Vera, Tiberius -as in James Tiberius Kirk, and Nims) and a cat (Binx). We live in Olympia, where I’ve been all my life. Sometimes the wet weather makes me dream of moving to someplace where the sun makes more regular appearances, but most of the time we roll with the seasons. We love everything from bike riding, golf and archery, to board games and family movie nights. 

 

I spend way too much time trying to convince my kids that Star Trek is better than Star Wars and am an avid reader of all kinds of books although of late I’ve enjoyed the escape of science fiction and fantasy. There’s a special place in my heart for The Chronicles of Narnia.  I’m always on the lookout for book recommendations. Send them my way if you have them!
