The Rule Book for Your Pharmacy Business

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Jun 20, 2019 @ 01:47 PM

Have you ever played a game without fully understanding the rules? Frustrating right? You get the concept and the end goal but the first time or two you play there's confusion, arguing with team mates and opponents alike, and just a general feeling of exasperation.

Whether we're playing a board game or trying to understand the concept of Frisbee golf for the first time, there's only one thing that gets you through those first awkward attempts. Understanding how the game is supposed to be played.

It's Trade Show Season! Are You Ready to Make the Most of This Year's Conferences?

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, May 30, 2019 @ 04:19 PM

Trade Show Season has arrived and we're gearing up to attend some of our favorite industry events in the coming months. (And looking forward to attending our first Connect conference with PioneerRx this weekend!)

We're excited every year to attend conferences like Connect, Amerisource Bergen Thoughtspot, and Cardinal RBC. We love seeing our customers, putting faces to names, and introducing new friends to our team and suite of point-of-sale products.

While every conference is unique, including different themes, new takeaways and lots of new industry contacts, they always have one thing in common. They are over in the blink of an eye. Packed with CE courses, user group meetings, dinners and entertainment, it's hard to find time to sleep, let alone make enough time to see everything on the trade show floor.

Here are our favorite tips to help you make the most of whatever shows you plan on attending this year.

Shouldn't This be Easier? Identifying Ineffective Pharmacy Workflows

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, May 23, 2019 @ 11:31 AM

For a long time, I disdained the pressure cooker hype. To me, it seemed like one extra, and very large, piece of equipment to take up space in my kitchen. But when my trusty slow cooker bit the dust I decided to buy one of those all in one do everything instant pots. I was still pretty sure I’d never use the pressure cooker function. I’d never cooked that way and didn’t see a reason to start.

But eventually, a lack of planning and absence of time had me giving something new a try. And as a result, discovering I’d been wasting a lot of time and energy because I hadn’t recognized the inefficiency in the way I was doing certain things.

My point here is that doing something the long way doesn’t mean it’s better. Seems obvious, but sometimes we get so mired down in the way we do things that we don’t stop to ask ourselves an important question. Shouldn’t this be easier?

If you’re looking at some of the workflows in your pharmacy, and you start to ask yourself this question, you’re likely going to find yourself saying “yes” at least a few times. And maybe lot more. But at the same time, you may wonder whether it’s worth it to invest the time, effort or money into changing workflows around. Here are some helpful qualifications to get you on the right track.

What Does "Strategy" Actually Mean Anyway?

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, May 16, 2019 @ 10:53 AM

If you dive down the rabbit hole of trying to better your business in any meaningful way, you're going to run into the idea of "strategy". It's become so prevalent it almost seems like a buzzword. And it's easy to start to think it might not really apply. After all, you're not playing a board game or planning a hostile takeover. You're running a pharmacy. Do you really need to think about strategy?

At the most basic level, a strategy is not a game of chess. It's not you pitted against anyone else either. It's a plan that you use to achieve a goal.

But if it's that simple, and that sensible, why doesn't everyone use a more strategic approach to growth and profitability in their pharmacy? Well, like most things the big picture is just that. Way too big to tackle in one piece. Breaking it up into smaller pieces makes everything much more manageable. Here's how to do it.

What to do When Space is at a Premium in Your Pharmacy

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, May 09, 2019 @ 04:35 PM

Getting rid of unnecessary clutter seems to be trending. From simple organization hacks, to purging your life of everything that doesn't bring you joy, or even tiny house living. The idea that less is more is taking over.

Whether you subscribe to this theory of less is more in your personal life, chances are there's at least one place that could benefit from a more minimalist approach.

The pharmacy counter is often stuffed to capacity. Counter top displays compete for space with point-of-sale equipment and you need more registers than you actually have space for.

What's the Real Cost?

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Apr 18, 2019 @ 09:00 AM

Cost vs. value is a tricky thing. How do you decide whether something is really worth the money you'll spend on it? It's a question we talk about often here at RMS, as pharmacy-point-of-sale isn't just an application and a bunch of new hardware. Point-of-sale is an investment in your pharmacy. And if you invest in the right POS system, your returns can be pretty big.

But where do those returns actually come from? How does money out of pocket for new technology in your pharmacy end up becoming a positive on your bottom line?

Are Your Pharmacy Staff Dependent on You?

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Apr 11, 2019 @ 09:00 AM

This coming Fall, my kiddos will be starting Kindergarten. And even 5 months away, there's a flurry of preparation. I've filled out what feels like a mountain of paperwork, copied all of their records twice, and attended orientations meant to prepare the little ones and their parents for the upcoming change.

Throughout this process, I've realized just how much I've inadvertently been doing for my kids, rather than teaching them how. Little things like making sure that they can turn jacket sleeves right side out so they don't hold up the recess line or knowing that they can peel a banana on their own at lunch time.

These things just never seemed like a big deal. It's faster to help the kid get their coat on than it is to put down the car keys and take the time to walk them through doing it themselves. And when lunch is on the table, well it just makes sense to have it accessible from the start. But what felt easier at the time was really just past me finding a way to give me future me a massive headache.

5 Things That Can Throw Your Pharmacy Off Balance

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Apr 04, 2019 @ 09:00 AM

Two weeks ago I woke up, attempted to get out of bed and promptly fell on my face. While I'm not what you'd call graceful, this kind of clumsiness is definitely uncharacteristic. A trip to the doctor's revealed that I had an ear infection, which was doing all sorts of nasty things to my equilibrium.

While I knew that ear infections could cause balance problems and dizziness, I'd never actually experienced it for myself. I was a bit surprised that something that seemed to be impacting me so little in every other way was throwing me off of my game so much.

There are so many working pieces that keep us balanced. Both physically, in our personal lives and in our businesses. In your pharmacy, there are dozens of seemingly small or unconnected things that can throw your entire pharmacy business out of balance if you aren't careful.

Point-of-Sale Beyond the Pharmacy

Posted by Karen Deckard on Thu, Mar 21, 2019 @ 07:00 AM

Pharmacy point-of-sale is a specialized tool. It must be that way to meet all of the requirements and needs unique to the pharmacy industry. Pharmacy system integrations, FSA card acceptance capabilities, and regulatory requirements are just the tip of the iceberg.

But just as the pharmacy industry itself is unique, we often see pharmacies that serve their communities beyond the pharmacy counter with distinctive product offerings and services. Soda fountains, gift departments, photo printing, DME product offerings and even small restaurants are just a few of the varied offerings our pharmacy customers have shared over the years.

The challenge for businesses like these often lies trying to figure out how to manage two distinctly different service types while keeping continuity for customers and staff.
